Virginia’s First Lady Calls to Recognize School Nutrition
On Thursday, December 8, 2016, the First Lady of Virginia,
Dorothy McAuliffe, called to thank Mrs. Kara Scott,
Supervisor of School Nutrition, school nutrition employees,
and school staffs for their good work implementing the
School Breakfast program. She was very complimentary of the
efforts that have been made which have resulted in increased
participation rates for students. Mrs. McAuliffe has
dedicated her efforts as First Lady to eliminating childhood
hunger and improving access to Virginia’s fresh,
locally-grown agricultural products for all citizens.
REMINDER For VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan Members (Newly
hired to VRS service on or after January 1, 2014) - upcoming
December 15th deadline for Hybrid Voluntary Contributions:
In addition to mandatory contributions, members may
contribute up to an additional 4 percent in voluntary
contributions to the defined contribution component of the
Hybrid Retirement Plan each month. There is also an employer
match (up to 2.5%) for contributions to the plan. Take
Action with Voluntary Contributions!
Beginning January 1, 2017, the VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan’s
Auto-Escalation Feature goes into effect. This plan feature
is designed to help employees save more for retirement by
slightly increasing the amount that you contribute from each
paycheck to your retirement savings. The voluntary
contributions will automatically increase by 0.5 percent
every three years until you reach the maximum of 4 percent
unless the employee opts out of the auto-escalation.
December 15, 2016, is the last day to opt-out of the January
1, 2017, automatic escalation of .5 percent. If you have any
questions or need additional information, please contact
Janet Hancock, Clerk of the Board, at email@example.com
or 434-4m32-2761, ext. 5008.
Breakfast with Santa:
Santa greeted Southside Elementary School students with a
big smile as friends and family enjoyed a well-balanced
breakfast. In preparing for the holiday season, students,
staff and family had the pleasure of talking and taking
pictures with Santa.
Pictured in the photo is 3rd grade student

School's annual breakfast with Santa.
Chatham Elementary School celebrated Veterans' Day by
inviting local veterans to a program at the school. The
purpose of the program was to honor those who served in the
armed forces, and to teach the students that freedom is not
free. Mrs. JoAnn Hightower, Cafeteria Manager, read a poem
that she wrote, students sang Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the
USA, and everyone sang The Star Spangled Banner. It was a
timely lesson that we were able to conduct in the context of
a special program. The students gained an appreciation for
our veterans’ sacrifices, and the veterans were honored in a
way that made them proud of their service.

Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports:
A team from Pittsylvania County Schools attended the
Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (VTSS) Aligning
Practices: Where the Rubber Meets the Road conference in
Roanoke on December 6, 2016. I was fortunate to have been a
part of this group from our division. I was encouraged by
what was shared throughout the morning while I was there.
Many of the established practices in place in Pittsylvania
County schools were listed as enhancements in the Tiered
Fidelity Inventory. Some of the Enhancements are as follows:
practices (EBPs) are selected, defined and implemented
in a way that is culturally responsive.
Pacing guides and
written guidelines for instructional expectations are
aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning and are
used for lesson planning. EBPs are implemented with
Lesson plans are
matched to task demand and include application to real
scaffolding to promote success for students.
A procedure is in
place to evaluate Tier 1 data with re-teaching.
Measurable goals and
measures of student performance are in place.
The good work provided by
our staff is making a difference for our students and our
Students at Chatham Elementary School have ushered in the
Christmas Spirit wholeheartedly. Fifth grade choral students
participated in the Town Illumination and Festival of Carols
on Friday, December 2, 2016. Over 70 students, along with
faculty and staff participated on Saturday in the Chatham
Christmas Parade. A Christmas concert was held at the
December PTO meeting with audience participants joining in
the singing of carols. In keeping with this Spirit, a canned
food drive was sponsored by the Jr. Beta students and
Chatham Elementary School with approximately 300 canned
goods collected and donated to the Salvation Army. Chatham
Elementary School wishes all a Merry Christmas and a
Prosperous and Happy New Year.
Students pictured are Taliah White, Trinity Custer, Will
Anderson, and Ben Williams.
I have attended several
holiday concerts across the division this year and all have
been outstanding. As we wind down the first semester, I hope
that all is well with you and your families.
