School Board Budget Meeting – January 26, 2017:
I would like to thank everyone who came out Thursday night for the School Board’s Budget Committee meeting. It was good to see and hear support for the efforts the School Board is making on behalf of staff. Mr. Todd Sanders, Chairman of the Budget Committee, opened the meeting with a review of the State’s proposed health insurance plan for teachers. Mrs. Tracey Worley, Director of Finance, provided an overview of the timeline for the plan. I would like to include the timeline that was shared in last week’s edition of the Wrap-up again this week to highlight Pittsylvania County’s participation.

The School Board directed staff to notify the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) of the school division’s interest to participate. Notification of participation was provided by staff to DHRM by the September 14, 2016, deadline. The Finance and Human Resources Departments completed the data submissions to the actuaries by the October 14, 2016, deadline. Based upon the data received by the actuaries from all participants indicating interest, preliminary insurance rates will be published in January 2017 (as of January 26, 2017, rates had not been published).

Once rates are known, the School Board will be informed and a decision will be made whether continuing participation is in the best interest of the school division. Should the rates be favorable and the School Board approves moving forward, a binding decision will be required in December 2017. The new insurance program will begin on July 1, 2018.

Regarding the School Division’s participation in the plan, Mr. Sanders said, “As a Board we are tasked with looking out for the students and employees. It is our job (the Board’s) to look into any option that may benefit them. It is for this reason that we opted to be in the pool. We are waiting for the rates to be published. The plan looks to be very beneficial for employees, and we hope it comes to fruition… At some time in the future once all of the information about this plan is presented, I am sure this will come to a vote. If it is as good as presented so far, then it would be a no-brainer.”

The Committee also reviewed the budget priorities as follows:

  • Implementation of the recommendations from Compensation Study

  • Support of the Virginia Retirement System employer rate increase

  • Implementation of the 1˝ percent bonus proposed in the Governor’s Budget

  • Reinstatement of five (5) teaching positions and one (1) library aide position

  • Addition of a teaching position for autism

  • Additional funding to cover substitute teacher/administrator expense

  • Replacement of ten (10) school buses

  • Replacement of potable water tank at Kentuck Elementary School

  • Repair/restripe Gretna High School track

  • Replacement of projectors

Regional Teachers of the Year:

On Thursday, January 26, 2017, Mr. Jason Ince, Pittsylvania County’s Teacher of the Year, and the other seven (7) Regional Teachers of the Year from across Virginia were recognized by the Virginia Board of Education and attended sessions of Virginia’s General Assembly.

100th Day of School:
Southside Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school on Thursday, January 26, 2017, by asking the Kindergarten team to kick start the celebration by dressing the part and looking 100 days older. On the 100th Day, students and teachers bring fun and creativity to the school environment. Southside Elementary School encourages students to not only come to school but to also enjoy the journey of learning.

MLK Day 2017:
Zander Cornell was recognized as the winner in the art contest for Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2017 in the Dan River Region. The theme of the MLK Day 2017 is “What Will You Stand For?” Students were asked to draw a picture of someone they considered a role model and what they stood for. Zander was recognized at the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2017, at Averett’s North Campus.
