Tunstall High School’s AP U.S. History Students Assist Pittsylvania Historical Society:

Members of Mr. Patrick Touart’s AP US History classroom began the work of archiving collected papers of celebrated author and noted community figure Frances Hallam Hurt at the Pittsylvania Historical Society Museum. Mrs. Hurt was the grandmother of former Congressman Robert Hurt and Washington Times columnist Charles Hurt and the mother of author Henry Hurt. She was instrumental in the creation of the Pittsylvania County Literacy Program, the Bicentennial Committee of Pittsylvania County, the start of the County's library system, and helping to save the Chatham Train Depot from demolition. She also wrote several major works of local history, including “An Intimate History of the American Revolution in Pittsylvania County, Virginia,” and she was the originator of the Callands Festival.

The students volunteered for this rare opportunity to become archivists and are now members of the Pittsylvania Historical Society. This project was coordinated by Dr. Larry Aaron and Mr. Glenn Giles of the Pittsylvania Historical Society.

Teachers and Students Participate in the STEM-H Summit:

Pittsylvania County teachers and students participated in the STEM-H Summit, sponsored by the Southern Virginia Higher Education Coalition, the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research, New College Institute, and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, on March 1 & 2, 2017. The Summit brought together regional stakeholders, business & community leaders, teachers, and students to explore STEM-H education and workforce development.
