Virginia’s Accountability Matrix (Draft)
Under the Federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA),
State Accountability Systems must address the following:
Progress in English Language Learners gaining
One or more other indicators of school quality.
The draft matrix shown above lists the indicators of
academic achievement and school quality under
consideration by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE.
ESSA requires that performance on Standards of Learning
(SOL) assessments, subgroup achievement gaps, SOL
growth/progress at the elementary and middle school
levels, the graduation indicator, and the Indicators of
School Quality be measured for all students and
reporting groups. The VDOE’s revised Accountability
System based on ESSA builds on the strengths and
addresses the gaps in the current system. These
principles are intended to provide a comprehensive
picture of school quality and drive continuous
Reporting Period Survey:
As the division looks to the future, the instructional
team would like to survey teachers and administrators
regarding thoughts about six-week or nine-week grading
periods. In the near future, a survey regarding this
topic will be sent by e-mail. Also, a SchoolMessenger
survey requesting the same information will be launched.
Staff members are asked to complete only one of the
surveys. Please contact Ms. Teresa Petty, Assistant
Superintendent for Instruction, if you should have a
question regarding this survey.
Chatham High School Finishes Fourth in State Golf:
Chatham High School’s Varsity Golf Team finished fourth
in the VHSL Golf tournament on Tuesday, October 11,
2016, at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg,
Virginia. The top teams were Giles High School (611),
Randolph-Henry High School (624), East Rockingham High
School (627), and Chatham High School (636). Chatham
golfers finished with scores as follows: Hunter Shelton
(164), Jacob Holley (156), Sterling Reynolds (164),
Justin Matherly (166), Kendall Shelton (169), and Mark
Dan River Middle School:
Dan River Middle School held Spirit Week on October 3-7,
2016. Throughout the week, there were numerous school
spirit competitions and collections that were taking
place between the three grade levels. Each grade level
was able to purchase spirit strips for $0.25 each, and
the winner was announced at a pep rally on Thursday
afternoon. All money collected went to help a Dan River
Middle School student who is currently battling
Leukemia. The 8th grade was the overall winner, and Dan
River Middle School was able to present the student and
family with a check for $600 to help with medical
expenses. Also, grade levels collected canned food for
God's Storehouse. The 8th grade won again, and the
school collected a total of 564 pounds of canned goods
to donate to God's Storehouse!
Mrs. Emily Reynolds, Principal, stated, “I am so proud
of our Wildcats - they not only showed amazing school
spirit, but displayed what a giving heart they all
Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center News:
Mrs. Angela Rigney, Principal/Director of the
Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center (PCTC), was
asked to present at the Virginia Association of Career
and Technical Education Administrators Conference (VACTEA)
on September 27-30, 2016, in Virginia Beach. She and
Mrs. Rebecca Roberts, Assistant Principal, shared the
great success stories for our division and PCTC.
Mrs. Angela Rigney and Mr. Joe Lee, Guidance Counselor
at Gretna High School, were asked to return to the
National Career Pathways Conference (NCPN) on October
5-7, 2016, in Indianapolis, IN. They presented "The
Academic and Career Plan: Preparing Students For Life
After High School."
According to Mrs. Rigney, the feedback received from
both conferences has been excellent, and interest in the
programs featured in the presentations has been
outstanding. So much so, that PCTC hosted other
administrators at the school’s Career Expo. Also, PCTC
will host Region VI CTE Administrators on October 19,
2016, at 11:00 a.m.
The administration and staff have been busy and have a
lot on the calendar during the coming weeks.
10/17 - Teacher of the Year Reception for Mr. Ince
10/19-22 - National FFA Convention, Indianapolis, IN
10/18 - PCTC Administrators, Teachers, and Students will
be attending the District II SkillsUSA Fall Rally in
Bedford (3:30 p.m. -until)
10/19 – PCTC will host the Region VI CTE Administrators
10/24 - Legislative Breakfast - PCTC Tours
10/27 - Dedication Ceremony for the two new programs:
Industrial Maintenance - Electrician and Industrial
Maintenance - Mechanic
11/2 - Robotics/Automation Meeting at IALR
11/3 - Dual Enrollment Meeting
11/14 - State Board of Nursing Visit Mrs. Rigney is very excited about the many
great things happening at PCTC. Just recently, the
Cosmetology Program was dual enrolled (DE) with Danville
Community College, and students can earn 29 DE Credits
