Virginia’s Accountability Matrix (Draft)

Under the Federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), State Accountability Systems must address the following:

  • Academic achievement;

  • Academic progress;

  • Graduation rates;

  • Progress in English Language Learners gaining proficiency; and

  • One or more other indicators of school quality.

The draft matrix shown above lists the indicators of academic achievement and school quality under consideration by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE.

ESSA requires that performance on Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments, subgroup achievement gaps, SOL growth/progress at the elementary and middle school levels, the graduation indicator, and the Indicators of School Quality be measured for all students and reporting groups. The VDOE’s revised Accountability System based on ESSA builds on the strengths and addresses the gaps in the current system. These principles are intended to provide a comprehensive picture of school quality and drive continuous improvement.

Reporting Period Survey:
As the division looks to the future, the instructional team would like to survey teachers and administrators regarding thoughts about six-week or nine-week grading periods. In the near future, a survey regarding this topic will be sent by e-mail. Also, a SchoolMessenger survey requesting the same information will be launched. Staff members are asked to complete only one of the surveys. Please contact Ms. Teresa Petty, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, if you should have a question regarding this survey.

Chatham High School Finishes Fourth in State Golf:
Chatham High School’s Varsity Golf Team finished fourth in the VHSL Golf tournament on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The top teams were Giles High School (611), Randolph-Henry High School (624), East Rockingham High School (627), and Chatham High School (636). Chatham golfers finished with scores as follows: Hunter Shelton (164), Jacob Holley (156), Sterling Reynolds (164), Justin Matherly (166), Kendall Shelton (169), and Mark Mitchell (180).

Dan River Middle School:
Dan River Middle School held Spirit Week on October 3-7, 2016. Throughout the week, there were numerous school spirit competitions and collections that were taking place between the three grade levels. Each grade level was able to purchase spirit strips for $0.25 each, and the winner was announced at a pep rally on Thursday afternoon. All money collected went to help a Dan River Middle School student who is currently battling Leukemia. The 8th grade was the overall winner, and Dan River Middle School was able to present the student and family with a check for $600 to help with medical expenses. Also, grade levels collected canned food for God's Storehouse. The 8th grade won again, and the school collected a total of 564 pounds of canned goods to donate to God's Storehouse!

Mrs. Emily Reynolds, Principal, stated, “I am so proud of our Wildcats - they not only showed amazing school spirit, but displayed what a giving heart they all have!”

Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center News:
Mrs. Angela Rigney, Principal/Director of the Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center (PCTC), was asked to present at the Virginia Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators Conference (VACTEA) on September 27-30, 2016, in Virginia Beach. She and Mrs. Rebecca Roberts, Assistant Principal, shared the great success stories for our division and PCTC.

Mrs. Angela Rigney and Mr. Joe Lee, Guidance Counselor at Gretna High School, were asked to return to the National Career Pathways Conference (NCPN) on October 5-7, 2016, in Indianapolis, IN. They presented "The Academic and Career Plan: Preparing Students For Life After High School."

According to Mrs. Rigney, the feedback received from both conferences has been excellent, and interest in the programs featured in the presentations has been outstanding. So much so, that PCTC hosted other administrators at the school’s Career Expo. Also, PCTC will host Region VI CTE Administrators on October 19, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.

The administration and staff have been busy and have a lot on the calendar during the coming weeks.
