Superintendent's Weekly Wrap-Up

School Year 2016-2017

October 7, 2016

“The world of literature has everything in it, and it refuses to leave
anything out. I have read like a man on fire my whole life because the
genius of English teachers touched me with the dazzling beauty of language.
Because of them I rode with Don Quixote and danced with Anna Karenina at a ball in St. Petersburg and lassoed a steer in "Lonesome Dove" and had
nightmares about slavery in "Beloved" and walked the streets of Dublin in
"Ulysses" and made up a hundred stories in the Arabian nights and saw my
mother killed by a baseball in "A Prayer for Owen Meany." I've been in ten
thousand cities and have introduced myself to a hundred thousand strangers
in my exuberant reading career, all because I listened to my fabulous
English teachers and soaked up every single thing those magnificent men and women had to give. I cherish and praise them and thank them for finding me when I was a boy and presenting me with the precious gift of the English
language. ”  - Pat Conroy

SOVA Career ChoICE Youth Expo

Pittsylvania County students participated in the SOVA Career Expo on October 5 and 6, 2016, at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Center. The event provided students with an opportunity to see firsthand the jobs available here in this region of Virginia. Students had an opportunity to ask employers and employees about the education required to work in their companies and the skills needed to be successful. The Expo revealed to students that there are jobs in this area that pay very well and require at a minimum a high school diploma. They saw that most of the higher paying jobs require another credential in addition to a diploma.

Integrated Systems to Drive Implementation: Navigating a Three Lane Highway:

On October 5 & 6, 2016, Ms. Teresa Petty, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Ms. Carolyn Harris, Principal of Union Hall Elementary School, Mr. Cedric Hairston, Supervisor of Specialty Curricula Areas, Ms. Jenny Eaton, Director of Title 1 and Instructional Programming, Ms. Cathlene Scolpini, Lead Instructional Technology Resource Teacher, Ms. Robin Haymore, Director of Special Education, Ms. Elizabeth Craig, Director of Middle and Secondary Education, and Mr. Steve Mayhew, Principal of Dan River High School, attended the Virginia Tiered Systems of Supports (VTSS) conference in Richmond, Virginia. VTSS is a data-driven decision making framework for establishing the academic, behavioral and social-emotional supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students.

The County has been participating in the VTSS systemic approach that allows divisions, schools and communities to provide multiple levels of supports to students in a more effective and efficient clearly defined process. Implementing the VTSS requires the use of evidence-based, system-wide practices with fidelity to provide a quick response to academic, behavioral, social and emotional needs. The practices are progress-monitored frequently to enable educators to make sound, data-based instructional decisions for students.

VTSS functions under the anchor process of integrating data, practices and systems to affect outcomes. The essential elements of an effective VTSS framework are:

  • Data Informed Decision-Making

  • Evidence-Based Practices

  • Family, School and Community Partnerships

  • Monitoring Student Progress (including universal screening)

  • Evaluation (outcomes and fidelity)
