Division News:

Pittsylvania County Schools’ Standards of Learning Assessment Results Continue to be Strong:

2016-2017 Standards of Learning average pass rates for Pittsylvania County Schools meets or exceeds State averages in twenty-five of twenty-eight tested areas.

Congratulations to each of you. Your hard work on mapping, pacing and aligning the curriculum and developing lessons aligned with the rigor of the Standards of Learning is recognized. Thank you for all that you do to make Pittsylvania County Schools “a great place to learn and work.”

School Board Recognizes Students:

At its August 8, 2017, meeting, the School Board recognized the following students:

Pittsylvania County Receives CyberCamp Grant:
Congratulations to Ms. Deborah Powell, Principal of the Regional Alternative School/Horizon Academy/STEM Academy, and her staff for applying for and receiving a Virginia Department of Education grant to fund a Cyber Camp for students at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. The camp will serve 25 students from grades 9 through 12 and will meet on August 12, 19, and 26, 2017, at the STEM Academy. The program offers the following to students:

  1. Career exploration opportunities
  2. Exposure to NOVA Cybersecurity Labs
  3. Training in programming BoeBot Robots
  4. Exposure to Cyber Literacy and STEM EDA
  5. Participation for students 16 and older to the CyberStart US Challenge

Tunstall High School (THS) Students Receive Qualifying AP Scores:

A total of 24 THS students received qualifying scores for AP US History for the 2016-2017 school year.

Veteran Speaks to Gretna Elementary School Students:

Mr. Tom Lewis, Veteran from the U. S. Navy and member of the American Legion, attended an assembly at Gretna Elementary School where he spoke about the meaning and importance of the American flag. He also provided new posters of the Pledge of Allegiance to be displayed in every classroom. The faculty, staff, and students enjoyed Mr. Lewis' visit and greatly appreciate the service Mr. Lewis and the American Legion provide for our community.

Gretna Elementary School Open House:
The Open House for 2017-2018 was a great event at Gretna Elementary School (GES). Mrs. Paula Cocke, Principal, and Mr. Eric Moon, Assistant Principal, are looking forward to a GREAT year at GES! They invite parents and people in the community to get involved with the school and to participate in the many activities that have been planned for the new school year.

Pittsylvania County Schools Contribute to Heart Association:

In 2017, the total raised by the six participating schools was $46,589.08. Those same six schools have raised $920,476.00 during the years of participation. Please join me in congratulating those schools.
