February is School Board Appreciation Month:

School Board Members Pictured Above: Mr. Don Moon, Mr. Todd Sanders, Mr. J. Samuel Burton-Vice-Chairman, Mr. George Henderson, Mrs. Cassandra Crump, Rev. Raymond Ramsey, and Mr. Calvin Doss-Chairman

The month of February marks the annual observance of School Board Appreciation Month—a time to salute the work of school board members and celebrate public education. The theme of this year’s celebration, “Advancing Opportunities for All,” reflects the top priority of local school board members as they advocate for public education with local, state, and federal leaders on behalf of all students. The Pittsylvania County School Board develops policies and makes tough decisions on complex educational and social issues impacting the entire county. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $88 million, 8,700 students, 1,500 employees and 22 buildings. They preserve the core of our democracy—public education.

Please join me in recognizing and celebrating the work of our school board.

School Board Clerk Appreciation Week:
The VSBA Board of Directors has designated the third week in February (February 19-23, 2018) as VSBA School Board Clerk Appreciation Week, with a goal of building awareness of the role school board clerks play in assisting school board members, superintendents, and our local schools. School board clerks are appointed by law to fulfill the duties and responsibilities as outlined in policy by their local school boards.

Please join me in thanking Mrs. Janet Hancock, Clerk of the Pittsylvania County School Board, and Mrs. Tracey Worley, Deputy Clerk, for all that they do for the school division.

National Geographic Bees Completed:

The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition organized by the National Geographic Society, designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2018 National Geographic Bee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic Bee Champion.

School Bees have ended and school champions who qualify for the State Bee will be notified by March 2. State Bees will take place in every state, and the District of Columbia, on April 6.

STEM Night at Stony Mill Elementary:

Stony Mill Elementary School recently held STEM Night on February 6, 2018. This was held in conjunction with the annual STEM Fair. Students and parents had an opportunity to view STEM Fair projects completed by students in grades K-5. In addition to this, the STAR Lab, courtesy of the Danville Science Center, was open for students and guests. The staff of Pittsylvania County Schools' STEM Academy demonstrated some of the equipment students have the opportunity to use when they visit. Teachers planned and conducted hands-on science experiments and engineering activities for families to enjoy. It was a fun night had by all! The gym was packed with STEM Fair projects completed by the students. Congratulations to the following students in grades 3-5 for being a finalist in the STEM Fair. Grade 3: Ashlee Sams, Clara Mills, Jamison Dishman, Connor Smith; Grade 4: Trinity Overstreet, Tanner Sims, Hailey Robertson, Nikki Matzganis; and Grade 5: Hunter Mills, Kaden Brower, Derrick Jackson, Kaylee Smoot.

February is Dental Health Month, Delta Dental of Virginia Oral Health Tip:
The average child smiles 400 times a day. With so much grinning going around, your little ones should be proud to display their pearly whites! Educating children about the importance of dental health is key for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Teach your kids the importance of proper dental health during National Children's Dental Health Month this February with one of these two fun activities.

  1. Brushing and flossing chart. The earlier children learn to take care of their teeth, the better. Make sure they are getting their daily dental dose with our brushing and flossing chart. Let your child color a circle each time a dental duty is completed. Stickers work, too! Download the printable chart here.

  2. Tooth fairy coloring pages. Add one more sparkle and a smile to your their National Children's Dental Health Month experience. After all, who doesn't love the Tooth Fairy? Download coloring pages here.
