Changes in Federal Income Tax Reflected in January Pay:
The new tax reform legislation enacted last month creates a number of changes
for 2018 that affect individual taxpayers. The new tables reflect the increase
in the standard deduction, repeal of personal exemptions and changes in tax
rates and brackets.
Pittsylvania County Schools’ employees will see the changes on the January 31,
2018, payroll. Many employees will see increases in their paychecks to reflect
the new law. The payroll department has worked hard to implement this change.
All Employees Are Invited to an Information Session on a Proposed
Comprehensive Benefits Package:
The Finance Department is evaluating the Division’s Voluntary Benefits Program
and looking into an approach that will improve how these products are presented
to staff. It is thought that a change will greatly enhance the voluntary
benefits packages offered and the delivery method that we now use. Currently,
the following companies provide voluntary benefits for staff: American
Benefits/Superior Vision, Aflac, New York Life, National Teacher Associates (NTA),
Teacher Protective Mutual Life, Continental General Insurance merged with United
Teacher Associates (UTA), Washington National Insurance, and Genworth.
The Division is considering the selection of The Pierce Group Benefits company
to oversee all voluntary benefits. Before a decision is made, a representative
from the Pierce Group has been asked to provide a presentation to interested
employees. This presentation is planned for Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 3:30
p.m. in the Educational & Cultural Center (ECC) auditorium (Chatham, Virginia).
Staff planning to attend may request permission from their principals to leave
school in time to attend the meeting provided coverage is available.
Riverview Rotary Club Recognizes Tunstall High School Students and Mrs.
The Riverview Rotary Club of Danville hosted four (4) Tunstall High School
students who attended the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) program in
December to share their experiences at the leadership building event. Adrian
Nester was recognized by Riverview Rotary as a Paul Harris Fellow for
outstanding service to the Interact Club of Tunstall High School for the past
ten years. Paul Harris Fellows are named "in appreciation of tangible and
significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and
friendly relations among peoples of the world."
Pittsylvania County Schools to get new video conferencing technology:
Please join me in recognizing Dr. Jeff Early, Assistant Superintendent for
Operations, and the Information Technology Department for their work on the
writing and submission of a grant to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The
school division was recently awarded a $215,000 grant to purchase networking and
video conferencing equipment. The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant program. The school system
plans to buy a camera and camera station for each of the 20 schools.
When asked by a reporter about this opportunity Dr. Early replied, "It kind of
acts as an equalizer between what students here in the rural area have access to
versus what students in a more urban area have access to." The equipment will
allow students to go on virtual field trips, speak to students on another end of
the County, and possibly take college courses.
Gretna Elementary Plans for Read Across America Program:
The Special Activities Committee of Gretna Elementary School has planned a “Read

February 22, 2018. This Year’s Theme is “Down on the Farm.” The reading fair
begins in the gym at 5:30 p.m. and parents will assemble in the gym at 6:00 p.m.
for a musical presentation.
