Public School Choice and
Supplemental Educational Services
No
Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations require that school districts offer
Public School Choice and Supplemental Educational Services to students
enrolled in a Title I school that is targeted for School Improvement when
the school has not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading or in
mathematics for two or more consecutive years on the state assessment
(SOL).
Public School Choice:
Parents may request to transfer their children from their current school
to a “Choice” school that is not in School Improvement. Four
Title I Schools are offering public school choice for 2011-2012. Parents
of Chatham Middle School, Dan River Middle School, and Gretna Middle
students may request a transfer to Tunstall Middle School. Kentuck
Elementary students may transfer to Southside Elementary School or Twin
Springs Elementary School. The final deadline to request Public
School Choice for 2011-2012 is Thursday, August 11, 2011.
Supplemental
Educational Services:
Parents may register their children for free after-school tutoring
sessions. For 2011-2012, letters announcing the availability of tutorial
services will be sent to parents of all eligible students,
generally those who receive free or reduced-price lunch, who attend
Kentuck and Dan River Middle. The tutors will be employees
of private companies approved by the Virginia Department of Education.
Depending upon the provider selected, tutorial services may be provided
at the student’s school (or home if the tutorial service provides in-home
services).
Due
to Open Enrollment, slots for Supplemental Educational Services may be
available after the October 28, 2011 deadline. Please
contact Dr. Robert Gentry at Kentuck Elementary School or Mr. Carter
Lowry at Dan River Middle School regarding eligibility and availability
of slots.
A list of approved SES Providers
for Pittsylvania County Schools has been provided.
